La Leche League Northern Virginia Supports Breastfeeding Moms

Already got milk? Maybe not yet, if you’re expecting. But chances are you do if you’ve already started the journey. When it comes to breastfeeding, there can be a lot of pressure to have it be easy and make you feel like you’re failing if you struggle. You’re not alone in your feelings, but it’s definitely not true. This quote from La Leche League says it best “Breastfeeding is natural. It isn’t always natural like breathing (which is automatic), but rather like walking (which needs to be learned)”. Both the baby and you will learn together throughout your breastfeeding and bonding as you go. While most hospitals offer a lactation consultant after delivery, it’s not always feasible to access one when you are home. That’s where La Leche League Northern Virginia can help you.

About La Leche League Northern Virginia

There was a time when the medical field did not encourage breastfeeding. Additionally, it wasn’t practiced widely enough for women who wanted to breastfeed to have enough support, if any at all. Mary and Marian called on five of their female friends and acquaintances for help, and the seven mothers began to hold meetings. The Founders of La Leche League International, established in 1956, were Mary Ann Cahill, Edwina Froehlich, Mary Ann Kerwin, Viola Lennon, Marian Tompson, Betty Wagner, and Mary White. These amazing founders paved the way for LLLI to branch off to LLL USA and create not-for-profit organizations in states all over. Currently, La Leche League Leaders team consists of experienced parents accredited by LLLI to help other parents and those expecting with all areas of breastfeeding and have been doing so for over 35 years.

Services

Through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education, they aim to help mothers worldwide breastfeed successfully. They hope these resources will help promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an essential part of the baby’s healthy development and even the mother’s. Each Leader is an experienced parent accredited through LLLI to help parents or soon-to-be parents navigate the world of breastfeeding in many ways. You can reach them by email or phone or simply drop by one of their regular monthly meetings.

For breastfeeding or pumping support in Fairfax City, they would love to help. Call or email a Leader for help. They aim to return all voicemails within 24 hours or sooner. They also hold weekly meetings every Tuesday.
