In this season of tiny babies and big adjustments, I hope you know you’re doing amazing!
And if you’re wondering what to wear for in-home newborn photos, you’re not alone. Outfits can feel like a big decision during an already full season, and because of that, it’s one of the first things we talk about after you book your session.
Let’s keep this simple and timeless.
You don’t need a whole new wardrobe or perfectly styled outfits. A few soft, comfortable, intentional pieces will photograph beautifully in your home. And if you’d like help choosing or coordinating outfits, I’m always happy to offer guidance so everything feels cohesive without being overly “matchy.” But here’s a helpful starting point.
When choosing outfits for in-home newborn photos, soft neutrals are always a beautiful choice. Think cream, oatmeal, gentle gray, and warm earthy tones. These colors photograph beautifully in natural window light and keep the focus on your baby and your connection.
And when you want to incorporate color, think in baby colors.
Muted blues. Soft pinks. Gentle purples. Subtle greens. Pale, buttery yellows. The key word is muted. When colors feel soft and slightly toned down, they blend beautifully and keep your newborn photos feeling timeless.
I recommend avoiding very dark colors, neon shades, and super saturated tones. Those colors can feel heavy in newborn pictures and tend to pull attention away from the heart of the image.
Subtle patterns are perfectly fine, but try to avoid busy prints, especially if more than one person is wearing them. And instead of matching white shirts and jeans, aim for coordinated colors with a little variety. Mixing soft neutrals with a few gentle tones creates depth without looking overly matchy.
Most importantly, choose fabrics that feel soft and comfortable. You’ll be moving, rocking, and snuggling, so anything stiff or restrictive is best left in the closet.

For moms especially, comfort comes first.
You’ve just had a baby. You’re healing, adjusting, and doing something incredibly hard and beautiful all at once. Whatever you wear for your in-home newborn photos should make you feel comfortable and confident, not restricted or unlike yourself.
If you love dresses, a neutral or light-colored maxi dress is always a beautiful option. Maxi dresses photograph wonderfully because they’re flowy, forgiving, and easy to move in.
But if you’re not a dress person, you absolutely do not need to wear one.
A pair of well-fitting jeans paired with a soft, elevated top or cozy neutral sweater can look just as beautiful in newborn photos. The goal isn’t to change your style. It’s to look back at these images and still feel like yourself in them.
And if you want to get pampered (think hair, makeup, nails, toes) this is your permission slip. You deserve to feel your best in these photos. Just keep tones soft and neutral for a timeless look.

Baby truly doesn’t need anything fancy for in-home newborn photos.
A simple neutral onesie or soft, minimal outfit is often perfect. These kinds of pieces highlight their tiny features without overpowering the image and allow for natural movement during snuggles and stretches.
I especially love outfits that let us see those little hands and feet. Those tiny fingers and curled-up toes are such a special part of this stage, and keeping clothing minimal helps preserve those sweet details.
I offer a small newborn client closet with soft onesie-and-pant sets in gray and beige neutrals, along with subtle blue, green, pink, and purple options in newborn and 0–3 month sizing. Before your session, I’ll check in to see what colors or styles you’re leaning toward and bring a few thoughtfully selected options so you don’t have to worry about dressing baby at all if you don’t want to. But of course, if you have something meaningful you’d love to use, I’m always happy to incorporate it.

For dads, simple polos or button-ups paired with jeans or khakis work beautifully. Solid, neutral tones tend to photograph best and keep everything feeling cohesive.
For siblings, choose something comfy but slightly dressier than everyday play clothes. Soft dresses, knits, or neutral tops and pants all work well.
If your little girl is wearing a dress, I highly recommend bike shorts underneath. It keeps things comfortable and avoids any accidental unusable photos during all the movement and snuggles.
And if you’d like help pulling together a color palette for everyone, I’m always happy to talk it through with you.

My honest answer? Start with your closet.
Before shopping, look for one piece you love and use that as your starting point for color and style. Sometimes it’s easiest to style yourself first or dress one child first, then build a simple color palette around that. It makes planning outfits for in-home newborn photos feel much less overwhelming.
If you want to treat yourself to something new, you absolutely can. Those early newborn days are tender, and wearing something beautiful yet comfortable can help you feel more confident during a time when your body is still adjusting.
If you do plan to order something online, choose somewhere with an easy return policy and consider ordering a couple of options or sizes just in case. Planning about two weeks ahead can help avoid last-minute stress.
And remember, I have a small newborn client closet available as well. That’s one less outfit you need to think about.
At the end of the day, what to wear for in-home newborn photos matters far less than how you’ll feel looking back at them. I want you to see your baby, remember how tiny they were in your arms, and feel nothing but love for this season.
And most importantly… don’t overthink it. Years from now, you’ll care far more about how tiny your baby looked in your arms than what anyone was wearing.
